EVALUATION: PERSONAL PROJECT

For this personal project, I had to create illustrative posters, which would have been exhibited at an exhibition. With my clients being the general public, the main theme was that of loneliness, which was emphasised by the accompanying musical quotes, said by influential figures such as Oscar Wilde and Bo Bennet. These would be produced under a 12 hour period.

At the very beginning of this project, I was required to make a decision as to what my outcome was going to be. So to brainstorm, I completed three idea sheets with possible methods I could go with (since the project was "personal", it was quite a broad subject). The only requirement is that it had to have some sort of link to the CD packaging project- whether it be of music, or particular techniques I used during that project. One idea: was to create a series of t-shirts with influential musical quotes, another was to create an elaborate paper cutting, and the third was to create a series of posters, using illustration, paper cutting and paper weaving. I also created a moodboard of the possible outcomes that I could create, using existing works by artists I would be inspired by, as well as mind map of inspirations.
At this stage, I was set on creating a series of posters, using illustration, paper weaving and paper cutting, so I wrote a specification brief, stating what I was going to produce, who my target audience will be, where it will displayed, and the link with the previous CD packaging project. This also included artists who I would analyse and go on to work in their style. For the paper cutting, it was Julene Harrison and Han Jing with their meticulousness and elaborate skills, for illustration it was Lizzie Mary Cullen and Niki Pilkington, and their use of fine liner pens and graphite pencils, as well as the different marks and textures they create. Julie Cockburn and Greg Sand were my influential for the paper weaving, for their simplistic but effective paper weaves. So then, I began experimenting with these types of art forms, making sure to incorporate the styles of these different artists.
When the time came to confirming my final outcomes, I decided to just go ahead with the illustrative and paper cutting path. Because of the 12 hour time limit, it would be unlikely that I would complete all of these pieces of work using all the described techniques (and 12 hours goes very fast). So ultimately, I chose to create illustrative outcomes, with loneliness using musical quotes about loneliness. I would have to say that my two main inspirations were the illustrative artists: Niki Pilkington, Lizzie Mary Cullen and typographic artist Leandro Senna, whose style I would use for the quotes' typeface. With the combine qualities of these three artists, my outcome was fairly successful, I used the delicate marks typical of Pilkington, the different fine liner marks inspired by Cullen and the swirly, sinuous typeface seen in Senna's hand lettering, and that is what I think is good about my piece.I think that I replicated the styles of the artists quite well, and that I kept the composition simple, like Pilkington's style. To give it a cleaner appearance, I carefully went around the drawings, erasing any accidental marks and smudges made with my charcoal pencil. But on the flip side, i could have done one more outcome, as I intended to make 3 posters, but as mentioned before, 12 hours tends to pass by faster than I thought.
In general, I did like this project, more than I did the CD packaging one. This is because it was a chance to express my own loneliness through my work, mostly because the project theme was so broad.
